About Flywheel Larry Kirkland has dedicated his artistic career to large-scale public works that mainly function in commercial areas. This site-specific sculpture appears weightless, suspended from the ceiling. Fine lines and slivers of color create a sweeping movement that plays against mesh rectangles and narrow tubular steel rods. Kirkland’s background in textile design, along with architectural and industrial elements inspire the artist’s choice of materials. Kirkland says, “Scale, architecture, and detail, combined with natural and artificial light, and the variety of human vantage points significantly affect the sculpture.” The grid-like surface leads the eye around Flywheel, guiding viewers around the work, capturing its full, dramatic effect.
